Ah, the challenges faced by the first settlers in South Carolina! While deadly diseases, hostility from Native Americans, and poor leadership of the colony were indeed obstacles, I must say that the lack of materials to build homes is not one of them. I suppose they just used their impeccable DIY skills and built marvelous homes out of thin air!
