Korea and Japan both adopted policies of isolationism for different reasons. In Korea, the policy of isolationism, known as the "Hermit Kingdom," was largely influenced by the fear of foreign invasion and the desire to protect traditional Korean culture. The Joseon Dynasty implemented strict measures to limit foreign contact and preserve their unique way of life. Similarly, Japan's policy of isolationism, called "sakoku," was established by the Tokugawa Shogunate in the 17th century. It aimed to maintain social stability and prevent the influence of Christianity after years of civil wars. By restricting foreign trade and travel, the shogun ensured centralized control and protected Japan's cultural identity. These policies lasted for centuries, during which both Korea and Japan developed in relative isolation from the world. It wasn't until the 19th century, with increasing pressure from Western powers, that both countries were forced to abandon isolationism and open up to international trade and diplomacy.
