A total of $1904 was collected from the sales of adult and child tickets for admission to the zoo. $896 more was collected from the sale of the adult tickets than the child tickets. Each child ticket costs $3.50 less than an adult ticket. There were twice as many adult tickets sold as child tickets. Find the total

number of children who went to the zoo.

If total child ticket sales were c, then

c + c+896 = 1904
2c = 1008
c = 504
So, if there are x children, each child ticket costs 504/x
and each adult ticket costs 1400/(2x) = 700/x
Now,
700/x = 504/x + 3.50
x = 56 children
check:
child sales: 56 * 9 = 504
adult sales: 112 * 12.50 = 1400
