The weight of three week old kittens is on average 82g with a standard deviation of 8g. A random sample of 36 three week old kittens is weighed. a) Compute the probability that the mean (average) weight of the 36 kittens is more than 83g.

b) Now compute the probability that the Total weight of the 36 kittens is more than 2988g

Can someone please help me with b) as i don't understand what I need to do. Do I use X bar or just X? Thanks in advance for any help

a) your z-score for 83= (83-82)/8 = .125

Whatever method you use, your prob of below 83 would be .5497
so the prob of the 36 kittens having an average weight of 83 is 1 - .5497 or
.4503

b) for the total weight of the 36 kittens to be more than 2988 , the average of those
kittens would be 83, so it is just the same question

I use this webpage for these type of questions, I have no better
http://davidmlane.com/normal.html

For this question, just enter 82 as the Mean, 8 as the SD,
click on the above, and enter 83 in that box, you will get .4503

Play around with it using some of your earlier questions along this topic.
It replaces those tedious "tables" you will find in some old textbooks.
