compound and complex sentences

compound

Compound Sentence: A compound sentence is formed by joining two independent clauses (complete sentences) using a conjunction (such as "and," "but," or "or") and a comma. Each clause in a compound sentence can stand alone as a separate sentence.

Complex Sentence: A complex sentence is formed by combining an independent clause with one or more dependent clauses. The dependent clause cannot stand alone as a complete sentence, but it adds additional information or provides context to the independent clause.

Example of a Compound Sentence: "Our team didn't always win, but we always tried to be good sports." In this sentence, "Our team didn't always win" and "we always tried to be good sports" are two independent clauses joined by the conjunction "but." Each clause can be a sentence on its own, but together they form a compound sentence.

Example of a Complex Sentence: "Even though our team didn't always win, we always tried to be good sports." In this sentence, "Even though our team didn't always win" is the dependent clause, adding a condition or contrast to the independent clause "we always tried to be good sports." Together, they form a complex sentence.
