Summary
Dan and his friends, Abby and Jordan, take a road trip down to New Orleans, Lousiana the summer after high school graduation. The three met at a college prep. campus named New Hampshire College Prep (NHCP). They all experienced strange things at the campus because they all stayed in an old former asylum named Brookline. Well, the three are off on another adventure. They are headed to the source of strange occurrences, where Jordan's Uncle Steve happens to live.
Immediately when they arrive they start experiencing odd things, like Dan having visions of his dead birth parents, who he has never even met. You see, ever since he first went to Brookline, he has had an interest in knowing about his parents before Paul and Sandy, his foster parents. Dan and his friends go to a local library to meet up with some people who might have known his real parents. A young couple, Oliver and Sabrina, claim that they did know his parents, but Oliver and Sabrina get the three friends into some trouble. Down in New Orleans, there is an ancient group of grave robbers that go by the Bone Artists, who steal bones from graves and sell them to people. Dan soon finds out that his parents were involved with the police who were trying to shut these people down. Unlucky for Dan, Oliver accidentally mentions Dan's last name to the leader of the pack, known as the Artificer. Dan has the same last name as his father, Mark Crawford, so now that the Artificer found a blood relative of the people who almost shut his company down, he will do anything to get his hands on Dan.
Jordan and Abby are worried about Dan. They always have people following them, stalking them as they walk the streets of New Orleans. Soon, a gang breaks into Uncle Steve's house and pushes Uncle Steve down the stairs while the three friends are at the library. When they come home, police and local EMS are surrounding their "house"! They rush Uncle Steve to the hospital and Jordan, Abby, and Dan go with him in the ambulance.
After hours at the hospital, Jordan and Abby both fall asleep in the chairs in the lobby, and Dan decides to further investigate an abandoned funeral home, but the Bone Artists capture him in the act. Next thing he knows, Dan wakes up on the front doorstep of the library. Oliver takes him in and Dan heads back to the hospital before Abby and Jordan realize he left. He had the strangest feeling in his left hand, and he realized that these Bone Artists had taken his pinkie! Dan shrugs it off but doesn't know how to hide this from his friends so he tells them the truth. Uncle Steve is released from the hospital with a few minor injuries, and the next day the cops show up at their house. The cop comes in and takes Dan away because he was framed for murdering someone! Dan knows he didn't murder anyone, ever, but the evidence says otherwise.
The cop takes him to an interrogation room at the station and guesses who is interrogating him. The Artificer. He shows Dan's picture of the crime he "committed" and has all the evidence adding up perfectly. The Artificer takes him down in their secret lair, and the Artificer shows Dan the rows of shelves with bins of bones and the name of the person who they came from labeled on the side. Dan is forced to look at his mother's bin, but there weren't any bones in it. Then the Artificer threatens to take the rest of Dan's bones since his mothers are lost somewhere. To prevent from being murdered, Dan tries to make a deal with the Artificer, saying that Dan saw his roaming around New Orleans. The Artificer takes him out of the cave, and as he shoves Dan in the car, gun pointed in his back, he spots Oliver at the top of a building, gun pointed at the gang leader. A bone artist comes behind Oliver and pushes him off the building with a loud crunch. Jordan and Abby are waiting across the street, and as the Artificer is distracted by looking at his friends, he pulls him down and wrestles him to the ground. A motorcycle zooms down the road, and Dan runs as fast as he could out of the road to avoid a collision.
It was a hit and run. The Artificer was finally dead, and so was their secret organization. The bones were put in their rightful places and the gang members were arrested.
As for Dan and Abby, they both went home the next day, apologizing to Uncle Steve for the mayhem, but thanking him for the housing. Jordan decided to stay with his uncle to go to a college nearby New Orleans. Abby went to an art school for photography and Dan went to college in Pittsburgh, his home town. You could say life went back to normal for the three, and thank goodness it did.
