Doing a slope project in Algebra.

The instructions are to make a picture
And label coordinates points..
You have to show a negative slope.
A verticle slope, an undefined slope,
And a positive slope.
Here is my problem. I have to write
An equation and show my work for
the undefined.

Here is what I have to work with
(-5,4) (-5,7)
Is this how I should show my work?
7-4/-5 - -5 = 3/0. = 0. = SLOPE
Y = Mx + B
4 = 3/0 x -5/1 = 15/0
4 = -15/0
Don't know what to do

ahhh, your slope is not zero

look at your 3/0
we CAN'T divide by zero , 3/0 is undefined
If you look at your sketch , your line will be a vertical line
Anytime you have a vertical line, your slope will be undefined and the equation will simply be x = some constant
look at both of your points, the x is -5 for both, so the equation of your line is simply x = -5

btw, if the slope is 0, you will have a horizontal line and its equations will simply be y = c
where c is the y value of your point.

To find the slope between two points, you can use the formula:

slope = (change in y-coordinates)/(change in x-coordinates)

Let's calculate the slope for the given points (-5,4) and (-5,7):

(change in y-coordinates) = 7 - 4 = 3
(change in x-coordinates) = -5 - (-5) = 0

Now, you correctly identified that the change in x-coordinates is 0. A denominator of 0 in mathematics represents an undefined value, meaning that the slope is undefined in this case.

However, your calculation is incorrect. When dividing by zero, you cannot simply go from 3/0 to 0. Instead, you need to recognize that dividing any non-zero number by zero is undefined (∞).

So, the correct way to show your work is:

(change in y-coordinates) = 7 - 4 = 3
(change in x-coordinates) = -5 - (-5) = 0

slope = 3/0 = undefined

Therefore, the equation for the undefined slope would be y = 4 (since the x-coordinate does not affect the value of y).

To summarize:
- You correctly identified that the slope is undefined, as the change in x-coordinates is 0.
- However, the calculation 3/0 is undefined, representing an infinite slope.
- The equation for an undefined slope is y = a constant (in this case, y = 4).
