Homework Help: Math

the total fare for 2 adults and 3 childrren on the Tilt a Whirl ride $14.00. If a child's fare is 1/2 of an adult's fare, what is the adult fare? we know the answer is $4 for adults and $2 for children. How do we figure this out though in 4th grade terms -no algebra yet; currently learning fractions, decimals and angles. Many thanks.

At fourth grade, I'd try trial and error.

5 + 5 + 2.50 + 2.50 + 2.50 = 17.50 -- Nope!

4 + 4 + 2 + 2 + 2 = 14 Yes!
