    the 42.00 represents .7 of the original price
    so .7x = 42
    x = 42/.7 = $60
    The original price was $60

    check:
    30% discount of $60 = .3(60) = 18
    sale price = 60 - 18 = 42

    your way:
    .3(42) = 12.60
    your price = 42+12.60 = 54.6

    now .3(54.6) = 16.38
    your sale price = 54.60 - 16.38 = $38 ≠ $42
