Hello. I would highly appreciate some language help from a native speaker of English.

Do you think the following sounds natural English:
1)the topicality of the present study is prompted by the fact that... (maybe the word "relevance" is better here?)
2)these processes are examined in the works of J.White and B.Brown (which tense is correct here, present or past: are or were examined; and is the phrase "in the works of" normal, maybe "in the works by")
3)"from 1881, among his creditors was also the State Bank that gave him a 500,000-dollar loan" (is this word order possible?)
4)"they had to have education and be good at arts, including painting" (do I need an article in the phrase "to have an? education")
5)"300 estates and 5,000 slaves were in pawn"
6)"5,000 slaves, i.e. 25 percent of the total number, were pawned for ... dollars at (maybe IN)state credit institutions"
7)"they were granted financial benefits, even in the conditions of persistent state budget deficits"
Thanks a lot for your time and help.

Suggestions:

1) The relevance of the present study is prompted by ...
(Yes, "relevance" is better; also, it's better to leave out "the fact that".)

2) These processes are examined in the works of J.White and B.Brown ...
(Present tense is better. "in the works of" is the better choice.)

3) From 1881 onward, the State Bank that gave him a $500,000-loan was one of his creditors."

4) They had to be educated and good in the arts, including painting.

5) Three hundred estates and 5,000 slaves were in pawn. (Make sure you don't start any sentence with numerals; spell out those words.)

6) Five thousand slaves, i.e. 25 percent of the total number, were pawned for ... dollars at state credit institutions.

7) They were granted financial benefits, even under the conditions of persistent state budget deficits.
