I have a project which asks me to write a newspaper article and I'm kind of confused about where the byline goes. The directions say that the byline appears "under the headline." I've never seen a byline go directly under a headline and that is probably not what they mean. Is it supposed to go on the left at the next line?

Okay, so it goes on the left side in the next line? The thing is that I am doing this in Microsoft Word, so I put the headline in the center. When I put the byline, it will be on the left side of the document, so it will not be directly under the title, as shown in the images. Is this fine?

That comes down to the style used by the publication.

To determine the correct placement of a byline in a newspaper article, you can follow these general guidelines:

1. Traditionally, the byline appears immediately under the article's headline. However, as newspaper design and formatting have evolved, this placement is not set in stone.

2. Check the newspaper's style guide. Different publications may have their own style rules for where the byline should go. If you have access to a style guide for the newspaper you're writing for, look for specific instructions regarding the placement of the byline. The style guide may also provide information on font size, formatting, and other details.

3. Analyze the layout of newspaper articles in the publication. Look at past editions of the newspaper to see how bylines are typically positioned. Pay attention to where the bylines are located in relation to the headline.

4. If you're unable to find specific style guidelines or examples in the publication, consider some common alternatives. In many newspapers, the byline is placed on the left side of the article, aligning with the beginning of the article's text. It is often separated from the headline by a horizontal line or a space. This placement allows readers to quickly identify the author of the article.

Remember, the exact placement of a byline may vary depending on the newspaper's formatting preferences or design choices.
