Find the value of x
40-x/3=4
please not the / means a fraction.
I already know that x is 28 when I first saw the question but I'm not sure how to show my working out.
Please I'm really struggling
40 - x / 3 = 4 Add x / 3 to both sides
40 - x / 3 + x / 3 = 4 + x / 3
40 = 4 + x / 3 Subtract 4 to both sides
40 - 4 = 4 + x / 3 - 4
36 = x / 3 Multiply both sides by 3
108 = x
x = 108
if you put that back into the equation it doesn't work.
If your exspressio mean :
( 40 - x ) / 3 = 4
Then multiply both sides by 3
3 * ( 40 - x ) / 3 = 3 * 4
40 - x = 12 Subtract 12 to both sides
40 - x - 12 = 12 - 12
28 - x = 0 Add x to both sides
28 - x + x = 0 + x
28 = x
x = 28
thank you!!
You're welcome
To solve for x in the equation 40 - (x/3) = 4, we can follow these steps:
Step 1: Simplify the equation
Start by multiplying both sides of the equation by 3 to eliminate the fraction:
3 * (40 - (x/3)) = 3 * 4
This simplifies to:
120 - x = 12
Step 2: Get x on one side
To isolate x on one side of the equation, we need to move the constant term, in this case, 120, to the other side.
We can do this by subtracting 120 from both sides:
(120 - x) - 120 = 12 - 120
Simplifying this further:
- x = -108
Step 3: Solve for x
Now that we have -x on one side of the equation, we can multiply both sides by -1 to solve for x:
(-1) * (-x) = (-1) * (-108)
This simplifies to:
x = 108
So the value of x is 108.
Note: In your question, you mentioned that x is equal to 28. However, the equation provided does not yield x = 28 as the solution. Please double-check your calculations or ensure you input the equation correctly.
