What you have is -(3/4 + 1/2)
1/2 - 3/4 is in fact -1/4.
-(3/4 - 1/2) is -1/4
Hate to say it, but old Dad is right again.
Start off with a negative value, and subtract even more from it, and it gets more negative, not less negative.
Plot -3/4 on the number line.
Then move to left another 1/2. You wind up at -5/4 = -1 1/4.
