  1. The water pressure where the IV liquid enters the blood stream must be slightly greater than the pressure of the blood vein at that point; otherwise the fluid cannot enter the blood stream. Raising the height of the bag increases the pressure at the end of the tube, where the connection is made.

    The weight of a column of IV fluid, per unit area, above the place where the fluid enters the blood is equal to the increase in pressure.
