1) Wilfred Owen enlisted as a soldier in 1915. During his first mission in France, he spent some time in hospital to recover from shell shock.
2) There, he met poet Siefried Sassoon who read his poems and encouraged him to write. Owen returned to the front line in August 1918.
3) On November 4, 1918, he was killed in a German machine gun attack only a few months after Disabled and Other Poems was ready for publication. Owen wrote the preface to the book that has now become essential in discussing much of the poetry of World War I.
4) The underlying theme in much of Owen’s poetry may be summarized by his own phrase “the pity of war”, emphasizing the sadness and senseless loss wars bring (not brings)
