Identify the subordinate clause in the following sentence.

While I am not entirely sure, Bryant was a gold medalist in the shot put last year.

A. While I am not entirely sure

B. not entirely sure

C. Bryant was a gold medalist

D. Bryant was a gold medalist in the shot put last year

I think it is D?

D. can stand by itself so it is an independent clause.

Ok then I would think it is C.

Do you understand what "subordinate" and "clause" mean?

I looked it up and it said that it usually starts with a conjunction and is about the main clause. So I guess i don't understand fully what it means.

OK, every clause has a subject and a verb, but subordinate clauses can't be sentences on their own. Independent (main) clauses can either be sentences on their own or combined with other clauses to make longer sentences.

In your sentence above, there are two clauses: one subordinate (dependent) and one independent. Do you recognize the two clauses? Can you separate the sentence into the two?

While I am not entirely sure, Bryant was a gold medalist in the shot put last year.

Thanks - I figured it out

OK, good!
