Can someone help me with this?
1)What new element is formed if magnesium-24 is bombarded with a neutron and then ejects a proton? Write a balanced nuclear equestion for this transmutation.
Is this beta decay? That's what I'm thinking, but I'm not sure.
It ejects a proton, so the atomic number is now 11
12Mg24 + 0n1 >>> 1 p1 + 11X24
So what is X? atomic number 11, atomic mass 24
Beta decay means a beta particle (an electron) is emitted. A proton is emitted in your problem.
Thanks guys!
Nvm that was mean, I take back what i said
X= Na, or sodium
To determine the new element formed, we can look at the atomic number of the product. In this case, since a proton (atomic number 1) is ejected, the atomic number of the product is 11. Therefore, the new element is sodium (Na), since sodium has an atomic number of 11.
The nuclear equation for this transmutation can be written as:
12Mg24 + 0n1 ⟶ 1p1 + 11Na24
Note that the atomic mass is conserved on both sides of the equation, but the atomic number changes from 12 to 11 due to the ejection of a proton.
So, in summary, the new element formed is sodium (Na) and the nuclear equation for this transmutation is 12Mg24 + 0n1 ⟶ 1p1 + 11Na24.
