"Americans"? Generalizations muddle thinking. Which Americans? Artists? Farmers, Republicans? Mental Health workers? Did all of them see themselves as different?
What about Frank Lloyd Wright, or the Decomania in Miami? The Chrysler building?
The term "Americans" is pretty vague, as is the use of "Art".
