Why did many freedmen and poor whites become sharecroppers?

Answer - Some large planters had held onto their land and wealth through the war. Now they had land but no slaves to work it.

am i correct???????????

Right.

Poor people don't have the money to buy land or seed, so they must work for other farmers as sharecroppers.

Thank You!!! :)

PS -- please reply my other post below

Yes, you are partially correct. Many freedmen and poor whites became sharecroppers because after the Civil War, large planters who had lost their enslaved labor force during the war still needed workers to cultivate their land. At the same time, many former slaves and poor whites did not have the resources or means to acquire land of their own. Sharecropping emerged as a system in which landowners would provide the land, tools, and supplies, while sharecroppers would provide the labor. In return, the sharecroppers would give a percentage of the crop they produced to the landowner as payment. This arrangement allowed the landowners to continue agricultural production, and it provided a means of subsistence for the freedmen and poor whites, although often with limited economic opportunities and high levels of debt.
