Which of the following was not an innovation that came about due to militarization in the 1800s?

A. Larger farms
B. Margarine
C. Canned food and milk
D. Factory production of bread

**My choice is C....

Why C?

I disagree, but maybe if I know your reasoning ... Have you looked any of these up? What does your textbook say?

I've looked all over my books and I cant find it. I choose c because as far as I know, they used to put milk in glass bottles, not cans.

"larger farms" -- larger than what?

We had many small family farms around here (New England) when I was a child. It seems to have been a combination of agricultural subsidies and the creation of gigantic machinery that enabled one person to plant and harvest hundreds of acres that led to the huge corporate farms of today.

Perhaps you can count the shortage of male farm workers during the US Civil War as a factor in causing the consolidation of farms into larger holdings. However it seems a stretch.

Although automatic bread slicing is recent history central bakeries have existed for centuries.

Thank you both :)

You're welcome!

To determine which of the options was not an innovation that came about due to militarization in the 1800s, we can analyze each option and eliminate the ones that did arise from militarization.

A. Larger farms: The need for increased agricultural production to feed military forces led to the establishment of larger farms. This was indeed an innovation that came about due to militarization.

B. Margarine: During the 1800s, margarine was developed as a substitute for butter. However, this innovation was not directly linked to militarization. Margarine was actually created in response to a butter shortage and was initially intended as a cheaper alternative.

C. Canned food and milk: Canned food and milk were significant innovations that resulted from militarization during the 1800s. These developments allowed for longer shelf life, easier transportation, and more efficient provisioning of soldiers.

D. Factory production of bread: Militarization in the 1800s led to advancements in industrialization and mass production. This included the factory production of bread to efficiently supply military forces. Therefore, this option is also an innovation that resulted from militarization.

Based on the analysis, the option that was not an innovation that came about due to militarization in the 1800s is B. Margarine.
