Two numbers have a product of 3 1/5 and a sum of 3 3/5. One of the numbers is a whole number. Find the numbers.

xy = 3.2

x+y = 3.6

from 2nd: y = 3.6-x

sub into 1st:
x(3.6-x) = 3.2
3.6x - x^2 - 3.2 = 0
x^2 - 3.6x + 3.2 = 0
x = (3.6 ± √.16)/2
= (3.6 ± .4)/2 = 1.88 or 2

if x = 2, then y = 1.6

if x = 1.88 , then y = 3.2/1.88 = 320/188 = 80/47

Since one of the numbers has to be a whole number, we reject the second case and the numbers are
2 and 1.6

check: 2(1.6) = 3.2 = 3 1/5
2 + 1.6 = 3.6 = 3 3/5
