Becky found $2.00 in her back pocket when she got dressed this morning. She went to the grocery store with her mom and bought a large bag of Skittles. When she got home, she sorted them by color. The chart below shows how many of each color she had.

Red 20
Orange 20
Yellow 17
Green 13
Purple 10

She ate all of her red and purple Skittles first. What fraction of her Skittles did she eat? Simplify the fraction, if possible
3/8?

Ms.Sue, earlier you said the answer was 5/8, right?

No.

Please read all of my response carefully.

She then ate half of the remaining Skittles and saved the rest. What fraction of the bag of Skittles did she save? Simplify the fraction,if possible

Is this one 5/16?

Right.

On the first question is it 3/8? Cause what I did was add 20 and 10 and I got 30. Than I added all of the Skittles and got 80. So the fraction was 30/80 and I simplified that to 3/8

Yes. The first answer is 3/8

Ok Thanks! On this question:She then ate half of the remaining Skittles and saved the rest. What fraction of the bag of Skittles did she save? Simplify the fraction,if possible

Did I have to simplify 25/80 to get 5/16? If I did where was I suppose to get 25/80 from cause I thought it was 30/80. I thought I had to find what was half of 30 so I got 15/80 than simplified that to 3/16.

To find the fraction of Skittles Becky ate, we need to determine the total number of Skittles she had and subtract the number she ate (red and purple) from it.

The total number of Skittles Becky had is the sum of the quantities for each color: 20 (red) + 20 (orange) + 17 (yellow) + 13 (green) + 10 (purple) = 80 Skittles.

Becky ate all of her red (20) and purple (10) Skittles, which totals to 20 + 10 = 30 Skittles.

To find the fraction, we divide the number of Skittles she ate (30) by the total number of Skittles she had (80):

Fraction = 30/80

This fraction can be simplified by dividing both the numerator and the denominator by their greatest common divisor, which in this case is 10:

Fraction = (30 ÷ 10) / (80 ÷ 10)
Fraction = 3/8

Therefore, Becky ate 3/8 of her Skittles.
