The -y and +y cancel out in this case and no extra multiplication is needed.

4x = 3

8x= 4
x= 1/2

Now plug in x to one of the equations. I picked the second one.

4(1/2) + y = 1
2 + y = 1
y + 2 = 1
y = -1
