Later this year Venus will transit the Sun. Use the known diameter and distance of the Sun and Venus to determine how big the Sun will appear to be in degrees and how big Venus will be in degrees during the transit.

(Object diameter)/(Object distance) = subtended angle (in radians)

Multiply radians by 180/pi to convert to degrees.

The sun subtends, on the average, 0.50 degrees from Earth.

For the distance to Venus during transit, Subtract the Venus-sun distance from the Earth-sun distance. Do you see why?
