EXPLAIN TERNARY FORM

WHAT HAVE PLAYED / SOUND IN THIS STRUCTURE

There is a brief description of the ternary form of music, with some examples, at:

Mendelssohn's "Song Without Words" is one example.

Do not confuse ABA with ABBA ;-)

One of the examples mentioned is played at (Broken Link Removed)

The ABA form?

The first and third parts are very similar, sometimes identical. The second part, the B part, is sharply contrasted to the first and third.

Examples of da capo arias, which are in ternary form, are provided at

Ternary form is a musical structure commonly used in classical music. It consists of three main sections: A-B-A. The first section, A, is usually called the "exposition" and presents a melodic theme. The second section, B, often called the "development", introduces new material or modifies the initial theme. Finally, the third section, A, is a repeat of the first section, creating a sense of return and familiarity.

In terms of what can be played or what sounds can be used in this structure, it really depends on the composer's intentions and the style of music being created. Ternary form has been used in various genres and time periods, so the possibilities are quite broad.

In the first section (A), the composer might establish the main theme with certain instruments or musical elements. This could involve a combination of melody, harmony, rhythm, and dynamics, depending on the desired sound and mood.

In the second section (B), the composer has more freedom to explore different ideas. They might introduce contrasting melodies or harmonies, change the tempo or texture, or even modulate to a different key. This section typically showcases variation and development of the initial theme.

In the final section (A), the composer generally brings back the original theme, creating a sense of resolution and closure. They may choose to repeat it exactly as before or make slight modifications to add interest.

Overall, the sound and musical elements used in ternary form can be quite diverse, as it allows for contrast, variation, and return. The specific choices made by the composer will depend on their artistic vision and the context of the composition.
