In division, what does it mean to decide to drop, include or use the remainder?

Ex: You decide to hang shelves. Each shelf needs 4 brackets. You have 23 brackets. How many shelves can you hang/ What do you do with the remainder, drop, include or use and why????

23/4 = 5 3/4

well you can hang 5 shelves, but what are you going to do with the REMAINING three brackets?

Hang part of a shelf ?

I think you might a well DROP them in the waste basket.

U r so dumb for this question

boi, u are weird

Uhh, thanks I guess? It makes sense at least...

When dividing, deciding whether to drop, include, or use the remainder depends on the context and the problem you are trying to solve.

In the example you provided, you have 23 brackets and each shelf needs 4 brackets. To determine how many shelves you can hang, you can divide the total number of brackets by the number of brackets needed for each shelf. So, 23 brackets divided by 4 brackets per shelf equals 5.75 shelves.

Now, let's discuss what you can do with the remainder:

1. Drop the Remainder:
If you choose to drop the remainder, you would round down to the nearest whole number. In this case, you would have 5 shelves because you cannot hang a fraction of a shelf.

2. Include the Remainder:
If you choose to include the remainder, you would round up to the nearest whole number. In this case, you would have 6 shelves because you would account for the remaining brackets by adding an additional shelf.

3. Use the Remainder:
If you choose to use the remainder, you would keep the decimal portion of the result as a fraction or decimal. In this case, 5.75 shelves means you can hang 5 shelves completely and have 3 out of 4 brackets left. So, you would have 3 brackets remaining and they would not be enough to hang another complete shelf.

The decision about whether to drop, include, or use the remainder depends on your specific needs or constraints. If you have a limited number of brackets, you may choose to drop the remainder to make the most efficient use of your resources. However, if you have flexibility, you may choose to include the remainder or use it in some way.
