compare < > =

1) - 1/7 -6/7
i got : <

2) -3/4 -3/8
i got: <

3) - 1/2 - 2/10
i got : >

4) - 3/4 -1
i got: <

5) - 1/2 - 5/6
i got: <

6) -4/5 -1/3
i got: >

7) 5.2 > -8.3

8) -6.5 > 6.2

9) -4.9 > -4.3

10) 1.09 < -1.90

11) -1.22 < -6.5

12) -10.2 < -10.23

are these correct?

1) - 1/7 -6/7

i got : < ----------- no, -1/7 is to the right of -6/7 on the number line

2) -3/4 -3/8
i got: < --------- ✔

3) - 1/2 - 2/10
i got : > -------- no, -1/2 is to the left of -2/10 , so it is smaller

4) - 3/4 -1
i got: < --------- no , -3/4 is to the right of -1

5) - 1/2 - 5/6
i got: < --------- no

6) -4/5 -1/3
i got: > ------- no

7) 5.2 > -8.3 --- ✔

8) -6.5 > 6.2 --- no

9) -4.9 > -4.3 --- no

10) 1.09 < -1.90 ---no

11) -1.22 < -6.5 --- no

12) -10.2 < -10.23 --- no

You seem to be missing the concept here
Have you drawn a number line ?

Comparing two positives should give you no problem, since you would say
larger > smaller

If one is +, the other negative, that is even easier, obvious
positive > negative in all cases

here is a neat method to make sure you get the 2 negative case correct
e.g. #11) -1.22 and -6.5
write them down as positives without any >or<
1.22 ..... 6.5
it should be easy to see which sign belongs, in this case the <
so 1.22 < 6.5
then --------- -1.22 > -6.5 (notice I reversed the < sign to > )

try that method on those you missed and you will see why you were wrong.

now here is the example from school notes:

- 3/4 ad - 1/2
compare < > =

-3/4 becomes -.75 and
- 1/2 becomes -.5

so -75 is < -.5 is that right?

reiny could you see what dana posted she said all but 1 was wrong im confused

no #2 was wrong it s/b >

Yes, your last example is done correctly

It looks like your teacher wants you to change the fractions to decimals and the consider where they are on the number line
the -.75 would be to left of -.5 , so it is smaller and
-.75 < -.5
-3/4 < -1/2

Notice you will get the same result if you do it my way.

You obviously did not follow your own example when you did all those questions

im sorry i will redo this its getting confusing. your right im not really following i was out sick yesterday and will go in early tomorrow

im sorr

Let's go through each comparison and check if your answers are correct.

1) -1/7 is less than -6/7: Correct, the negative sign flips the inequality, so -1/7 is greater than -6/7. The correct answer is ">".

2) -3/4 is less than -3/8: Incorrect, both fractions are negative, so we compare their absolute values. The absolute value of -3/4 is 3/4, and the absolute value of -3/8 is 3/8. Since 3/4 is greater than 3/8, the correct answer is ">".

3) -1/2 is greater than -2/10: Correct, the negative sign flips the inequality, so -1/2 is less than -2/10. The correct answer is "<".

4) -3/4 is less than -1: Correct, the negative sign in -1 flips the inequality, so -3/4 is greater than -1. The correct answer is ">"

5) -1/2 is less than -5/6: Correct, both fractions are negative, so we compare their absolute values. The absolute value of -1/2 is 1/2, and the absolute value of -5/6 is 5/6. Since 1/2 is less than 5/6, the correct answer is "<".

6) -4/5 is greater than -1/3: Correct, both fractions are negative, so we compare their absolute values. The absolute value of -4/5 is 4/5, and the absolute value of -1/3 is 1/3. Since 4/5 is greater than 1/3, the correct answer is ">".

7) 5.2 is greater than -8.3: Correct. When comparing two numbers without fractions or decimals, you can directly compare them. 5.2 is greater than -8.3. The correct answer is ">".

8) -6.5 is greater than 6.2: Incorrect, -6.5 is less than 6.2. The correct answer is "<".

9) -4.9 is greater than -4.3: Incorrect, -4.9 is less than -4.3. The correct answer is "<".

10) 1.09 is less than -1.90: Correct. When comparing two decimal numbers, you can directly compare them. 1.09 is less than -1.90. The correct answer is "<".

11) -1.22 is less than -6.5: Correct. Both numbers are negative, so we compare their absolute values. The absolute value of -1.22 is 1.22, and the absolute value of -6.5 is 6.5. Since 1.22 is less than 6.5, the correct answer is "<".

12) -10.2 is less than -10.23: Incorrect, -10.2 is greater than -10.23. The correct answer is ">".

Comparisons 2, 8, 9, and 12 have incorrect answers.
