    As you can see, segregation was the policy that whites, especially Southern whites forced upon African-Americans that kept the two races separated -- in schools, parks, even drinking fountains. One of the most rabid segregationists was Alabama's Governor George Wallace who stood in the doorway of a school to keep African-Americans out of a white school.

    Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Rosa Parks and many other integrationist leaders courageously opposed segregation and led the courts to make it illegal.
