Años más tarde, algunos curiosos, principalmente los colegiales de San Carlos, dieron en esconderse a inmediaciones de la casa y seguir la pista a las portadoras de contrabando. Algunos misterios domésticos llegaron así a traslucirse, andando en lenguas la honra de casadas y doncellas. Lima se volvió un hervidero de chismes, y hubo muchachas encerradas en el convento, después de motilonas, y aun recibieron palizas muchos aficionados a cazar en vedado.
Discurriose entonces que la mejor manera de conservar el misterio era establecer un torno en la calle, junto a la puerta de la casa.
Un pobre zapatero que vivía en la calle de los Gallos estaba casado con una hembra tan fecunda que cada año lo obsequiaba, si no con mellizos, por lo menos con un vástago.
Aconteció que por entonces hubo epidemia de depositar muchachos en el torno, y rara era la noche en que de ocho a nueve no colocaran en él siquiera un par de mamones. Alarmose la superiora con esta invasión, tanto más, cuanto que le dijeron que un mismo individuo, embozado en una capa, era el conductor de los huéspedes. Propúsose la buena señora descubrir el intríngulis, si lo había, y apostó cuatro jayanes para que se apoderasen del encapado.
Quiso la suerte que esa noche se decidiera el zapatero a llevar su recién nacido a la santa casa, pues carecía de recursos para mantener un hijo más. A tiempo que los jayanes le caían encima, una enlutada colocaba otro niño en el torno.
Introducido el pobrete en la casa, le dijo la superiora:
-Es mucha pechuga que todas las noches traiga usted a pares los muchachos. ¿Qué se ha figurado usted? Ya puede cargar con los que ha traído hoy, antes que lo haga poner preso para que la Inquisición averigüe si tiene usted pacto con el diablo o fábrica de hacer muchachos. ¿Habrase visto la lisura del hombre?
Al oír lo de la Inquisición, contestó temblando el zapatero:
-Pero, señora, uno no más es mío, quédese usted con el otro.
-¡Largo de aquí, so arrastrado, y llévese su par de diablitos!
El zapatero no tuvo más que regresar a su casa con dos bultos bajo la capa y contó el percance a su mujer. Ésta, que había quedado llorando a lágrima viva porque la miseria la obligaba a desprenderse del hijo de sus entrañas, le dijo a su marido:
-Dios, que lo ha dispuesto así, te dará fuerzas para buscar dos panes más. En vez de diez hijos tendremos una docena que mantener.
Y después de besar al suyo con el santo cariño de las madres, empezó a acariciar y desnudar al intruso.
-¡Jesús! ¡Y cómo pesa el angelito!
Y de veras que el chico pesaba, pues estaba ceñido con un cinturón diestramente arreglado y que contenía cien onzas de oro. Además traía un papel con las siguientes palabras: «Está bautizado y se llama Carlitos. Ese dinero es para que su lactancia no grave a la casa. Sus padres esperan en Dios poder reclamarlo algún día».
Cuando menos lo esperaba salió de pobre el zapatero, pues con las monedas del infante habilitó la tienda y fue prosperando que era una bendición. Su mujer crio al niño con mucho mimo, y al cumplir éste seis años fue recogido por sus verdaderos padres, quienes, por motivos que no son del caso, no habían podido legitimar antes sus relaciones.
