Here is an instrument that I made for science olympiad state and nationals last year. Take two pieces of balsa wood about 3 inches by 1 foot, streatch a rubberband lengthwise around one of the pieces of balsa wood and rubberband the ends of the balsa wood pieces together. You will need to play around with it a bit to find the correct notes but each note should be about 1/2 in apart depending on the humidity (the wood will expand and compress as the humidity changes, which will alter the notes slightly). My team came in 3rd at state and 53 out of more than 60 teams at naionals in sounds of music for this design. For more ideas you could also check out the science olympiad homepage under the sounds of music page, division c events.

Have fun!

I forgot to mention that the design is for a harmonica, just blow into the opening between the two pieces of balsa wood to generate the sound. Also, you will need to put 2 rings of paper about 1/2 inch wide encircleing the piece of balsa wood widthwise underneath the lengthwise rubberband before rubberbanding the ends of both pieces of wood together. I found that it works better to glue or tape one of the pieces of paper down as far to one of the ends as you can so you only need to move one of the pieces of paper to change the notes. Blow in between the pieces of paper to get an accurate note.

Sorry it is so confusing.

If you need a picture, just search wooden harmonia in google images

To create a musical instrument in a classroom, you can follow these steps:

1. Decide on the type of instrument: There are various types of musical instruments you can choose from, depending on your resources and the desired sound. Some popular choices include shakers, drums, flutes, and guitars.

2. Research and gather materials: Once you have chosen the type of instrument, research the materials required for its construction. This will vary depending on the instrument. For example, if you want to make a shaker, you may need small plastic or metal containers and materials to fill them with (such as rice, beads, or beans). If you want to make a drum, you may need an empty container, tape, and a suitable membrane (a piece of cloth, plastic, or animal skin).

3. Plan the design and construction: Sketch out your instrument design and consider how you will assemble the materials. You may need to cut, glue, tape, or drill certain parts. Take note of any safety considerations, particularly if using sharp objects or tools.

4. Gather the necessary tools: Identify the tools you will need for construction, such as scissors, glue, tape, or a drill. Ensure you have these ready before starting the process.

5. Follow step-by-step instructions: Look for detailed instructions or tutorials specific to the instrument you want to create. Online resources, books, or videos can provide helpful guidance. Follow the steps carefully, ensuring you understand each one before proceeding.

6. Test and refine: Once you have constructed your instrument, test it out to see if it produces the desired sound. If not, experiment with adjustments or modifications to improve its performance. For example, you might need to add or remove filling from a shaker, or adjust the tension of a drum membrane.

7. Explore creativity: Encourage your students to personalize their instruments by decorating them with paint, stickers, or other materials. This adds an artistic flair and makes the instruments more engaging.

Remember to prioritize safety throughout the process and supervise the students, particularly when using tools or potentially hazardous materials. Enjoy the experience of creating music together in your classroom!
