Write the net ionic equation for the reaction that occurs when aqueous solutions of barium hydroxide and hydrobromic acid are combined.

I know that the first part of the formula would be BaOH + HBr but I do not know what the product would be since HBr is one thing. I do not know what to do at this point. Please help. Thank you!

  1. Ba(OH)2 + 2HBr ==> BaBr2 + 2H2O is the molecular equation. YOu can convert that to an ionic, then a net ionic equation. Remember that a base (Ba(OH)2) + an acid (HBr) produces a salt (BaBr2) + water.

  2. Would this be correct for the complete equation?

    Ba^2+ + OH^- + H^+ + Br^- = Ba^2+ + Br^- + H2O

  3. close but not quite.
    Ba^2+ + 2OH^- + 2H^+ + 2Br^- ==> Ba^2+ + 2Br^- + 2H2O as the complete ionic equation. You can convert this to the NET ionic equation by canceling ions common to both sides; for example, Ba^2+ and Br^- appear on both sides so cancel them. That leaves
    2OH^- + 2H^+ ==> 2H2O or
    OH^-(aq) + H^+(aq) ==> H2O(l)
