The miscegenation laws, which prohibited interracial marriage or relationships, were abolished by the United States Supreme Court ruling in the case of Loving v. Virginia in 1967. The case involved Mildred Loving, an African American woman, and Richard Loving, a white man, who were charged with violating the state of Virginia's laws against interracial marriage. The Supreme Court unanimously declared that these laws were unconstitutional, as they violated the Equal Protection and Due Process clauses of the Fourteenth Amendment. As a result of this landmark ruling, miscegenation laws were invalidated in all states, effectively ending legal bans on interracial marriage throughout the entire United States.
