The fear of using computers stems from several reasons. Most people don’t understand exactly how computers work. This lack of understanding will create tension and ultimately lead to fear. The constantly changing computer technology causes computer users to continually learn and adopt new skill sets. Most people feel overwhelmed because knowledge they learned once now isn’t enough—tomorrow’s knowledge may be different and may even require “unlearning” how to perform once-proficient tasks. Additionally, workers are afraid of being replaced by a computer. Less and less human intervention does indeed push many workers out of their jobs. People not only wonder if they have a job or not; they don’t know if they could find a job if out of work. Fear of computers is primarily fear of the unknown.
