what do you mean by parts per million?

1 gram something in 1 million grams total which is the same as 1 g something + 999,999 g something else.

If we are talking about 1 ppm salt in water, we have
1 g salt in 1,000,000 g salt solution which really means 1 g salt + 999,999 g water.
Or you can do it 1 mg/1 million mg
1 pound/1 million pounds etc.
If you are to convert something to ppm, I like to use the definition of 1 ppm = 1 mg/L. That is, 1 mg NaCl/L soln is 1 ppm.
ppm stands for parts per million.
You may also see ppt (parts per thousand) or ppb (parts per billion)
1 ppb = 1 microgram/L
You are aware, I'm sure, that pph (parts per hundred) is the same as percent.

Parts per million (ppm) is a unit of measurement used to express the concentration of a substance in a solution or mixture. It represents the number of units of the substance per one million units of the solution or mixture.

To calculate ppm, you would follow these steps:

1. Determine the mass or volume of the substance you want to measure. For example, let's say you have 1 gram of a particular chemical.
2. Determine the total mass or volume of the solution or mixture. For instance, let's say the total volume of the solution is 1 liter.
3. Convert the mass or volume of the substance and the solution to the same units, such as grams or liters. In our example, the total volume of the solution remains 1 liter.
4. Divide the mass or volume of the substance by the total mass or volume of the solution.
In our case, 1 gram divided by 1000 grams (the mass of 1 liter of water) would be 0.001.
5. Multiply the result by 1,000,000 to obtain the concentration in parts per million.
In our example, 0.001 multiplied by 1,000,000 equals 1000 ppm.

So, in this example, if you had 1 gram of the substance dissolved in 1 liter of the solution, the concentration would be 1000 parts per million (ppm). This means that for every million units of the solution, there would be 1000 units of the substance present.
