2) He devoted his entire life to the seach for beauty.
3) Dorian is terrified of ageing (or pained by the thought of ageing) and wishes that the portrait would age in his place whereas he remains young

1. If the antecedent of "that" is "light", then the verb is "makes."

2. OK

3. I wouldn't use "whereas" in that sentence. I'd use "so that" and then use "could remain" for that verb.
