  2. What happens is that a single electron changes its orbit. In an emission spectrum, an electron makes a transition from a higher to a lower energy state, causing a photon to be emitted at a particular frequency. In a very hot gas, many transitions of this type are going on simultaneously, resulting in a spectrum of different frequencies. Different types of atoms and ions emit different frequencies.
