1. Slavery was fundamental to the lifestyle of southern colonists only after the introduction of the cotton gin. This machine made cotton a profitable cash crop and and increased the requirement for manual labor, introducing the plantation system.

You need to add a description of slavery. Who were slaves? Who were masters? Where did slaves come from? How? Why?

What does "fundamental to the lifestyle of southern colonists" mean?

What types of manual labor were required?

What is "the plantation system"?
