1. A so-called "boot ver b" is one like poder, which changes o--->ue everywhere except for nosotros/nosotras and vosotros/vosotras. If you conjugate the verb with the singular on the left and the plural on the right:

yo puedo nosotros podemos
tú puedes vosotros podeis
él, ella, usted puede ellos/ellas/ustedes
pueden

Now draw around the 4 forms with the stem change and you end up with something that looks like a backward shoe! Now this is a PATTERN VERB for any shoe verb, so keep it in mind. Look at the stem (o--->u, e--->ie, e--->i, etc.) and the endings (o, s,---, mos, is, n)

5. jugar is another "shoe verb" and the subject is nosotros. You must conjugate jugar to agree with nosotros = jugamos. When you play AT a game, the idiom is "jugar a" so the answer is A.

6. This exercise is all about conjugating verbs. You need to know the tú form of querer = quieres

8. The verb "gustar" is NOT the verb "to like" because that translation gets you into trouble. It is the verb "to be pleasing" and "to someone". Translate what you see: "Is it pleasing to you............. Now what form of jugar is i t? "the infinitive = to play"

12. Preferir is another "shoe verb." If you look in the back of your textbook, you should find an Appendix that has pattern verbs conjugated. Here you need to know the form of "yo" which is "prefiero."

13. Now you need 2 forms of that verb = tú and yo. We HELP here but do not expect us to DO the work for you. I have given you enough explanation that you should be able to do everything else here. Feel free to repost your answers if y ou have time and I'll check them for you, if I have time!

1. The correct answer is B - in two subjects. A boot verb is irregular in two subjects because it undergoes a stem change in both the singular and plural forms of the present tense. For example, the verb "jugar" (to play) changes from "juego" (I play) in the singular to "jugamos" (we play) in the plural.

5. The correct answer is A - jugamos al golf. In Spanish, to say "We play golf," you would use the verb "jugar" (to play) and the preposition "al" before the sport. So the correct translation is "jugamos al golf."

6. The correct answer is B - quiero. In the sentence, María is asking Jose if he wants to play a sport. The subject "tú" (you) requires the verb "querer" (to want) conjugated in the first person singular, which is "quiero" (I want).

8. The correct answer is A - jugar. María is expressing that she does not like to play American football. The correct verb form is "jugar" (to play) in the infinitive form.

12. The correct answer is D - prefiero. Jose is stating that out of the three options, he prefers basketball. The subject "yo" (I) requires the verb "preferir" (to prefer) conjugated in the first person singular, which is "prefiero" (I prefer).

13. The correct answer is C - preferir. María is asking if Jose prefers basketball. The verb "preferir" (to prefer) needs to be conjugated for the subject "tú" (you), which is "prefieres" (you prefer).

14. The correct answer is A - pienso. María is stating that she thinks they should play chess. The subject "yo" (I) requires the verb "pensar" (to think) conjugated in the first person singular, which is "pienso" (I think).

15. The correct answer is F - piensas. Jose is asking why María thinks he cannot win. The subject "tú" (you) requires the verb "pensar" (to think) conjugated in the second person singular, which is "piensas" (you think).

16. The correct answer is D - puedes. Jose is asking if María thinks he cannot win. The subject "tú" (you) requires the verb "poder" (to be able to) conjugated in the second person singular, which is "puedes" (you can).

17. The correct answer is E - puedes. María is asking if Jose can see the rain. The subject "tú" (you) requires the verb "poder" (to be able to) conjugated in the second person singular, which is "puedes" (you can).

20. The correct answer is F - digo. María is stating that what she says is "eso es lo que digo." The subject "yo" (I) requires the verb "decir" (to say) conjugated in the first person singular, which is "digo" (I say).
