Je voudrais dire: "It has been two years since we were there".
1) Il y a deux ans que nous y étions.
2) Il y a deux ans que nous étions là.
3) Il a été deux ans depuis que nous étions là.
4) Il y a deux ans que nous sommes été là.
5) Il y a deux ans que nous y sommes été.

I'd say with the word "since" in English, the word "depuis" should be there in French! Therefore, I'm not crazy about any of them! I'd guess I'd go with 1.

What I wanted to convey with that sentence is that "we need to go there, because we haven't been there in two years."

Cela faisait deux ans que n’y étions pas allés
or
Nous n’y étions pas allés depuis deux ans.
y stands for là (there)
n’ instead of ne before a word beginning with a vowel
