I have a question about Vit B12.

Where is it absorbed in the body?
In lecture, the professor stated once that it's absorbed in the small intestine and then later stated it was the large intestine. I'm thinking small intestine makes more sense but I'd like to make sure. Thanks.

I think you're right.

Thanks Ms. Sue! :D

The absorption of Vitamin B12 occurs in the small intestine. More specifically, it is absorbed in the lower part of the small intestine called the ileum. This region of the small intestine has a special protein called intrinsic factor, which is necessary for the absorption of Vitamin B12. The intrinsic factor binds to Vitamin B12 and allows it to be absorbed through the lining of the small intestine and into the bloodstream.

The large intestine, on the other hand, primarily absorbs water and electrolytes, while also hosting a variety of beneficial bacteria involved in digestion and nutrient production. However, it does not play a significant role in the absorption of Vitamin B12.

So, given this information, the correct statement is that Vitamin B12 is absorbed in the small intestine, specifically in the ileum.
