Question
Consider the following sentences:

(a) River Song is an archaeologist from the future
(b) River Song is an archaeologist

Based on these two sentences, which of the following is true?

A. (a) entails (b)

B. (b) entails (a)

C. (a) entails (b) and (b) entails (a)

D. There is no relationship (neither sentence entails the other)]

What do you think?

1) D. no relationship? but they both tell that River Song is a person..so does that change the answer?

2)C. (a) entails (b) and (b) entails (a)??

I think you're right about 1 -- D (unless a screwdriver is a known tool for archeologists).

I think 2 can only be (a) entails (b). All of (b) is included in (a), but not vice versa.

To determine the relationship between the two sentences, we need to understand the concept of entailment. Entailment means that if sentence A is true, then sentence B must also be true.

Let's analyze the first set of sentences:
(a) River Song is an archaeologist from the future.
(b) River Song has a screwdriver.

In this case, there is no logical connection between the two sentences. Knowing that River Song is an archaeologist from the future does not necessarily mean that she has a screwdriver, and vice versa. Therefore, the answer to the first question is D. There is no relationship, and neither sentence entails the other.

Now let's move on to the second set of sentences:
(a) River Song is an archaeologist from the future.
(b) River Song is an archaeologist.

In this case, we can infer that if River Song is an archaeologist from the future (sentence A), then she must also be an archaeologist (sentence B). In other words, the fact that she is an archaeologist from the future entails that she is an archaeologist. Therefore, the answer to the second question is A. (a) entails (b).

To summarize:
1. The relationship between the first set of sentences is D. There is no relationship (neither sentence entails the other).
2. The relationship between the second set of sentences is A. (a) entails (b).
