The density of diamond is 3.51 g/cm3 and the density of lead is 11.3 g/cm3. If equal masses of diamond and lead are transferred to equal volumes of water in separate graduated cylinders, which graduated cylinder would have the greatest volume change?

  1. Pick a mass, any mass you choose. Then
    mass = volume x density and rearrange to
    volume = mass/density
    volume = substitute mass and density and see which has the larger volume.

  2. the graduated cylinder with the diamond would have the highest volume reading because its low density would have to account for greater volume
