Solving a system of linear Equations using Substit

Suppose a school club publishes a newslettter. Expenses are 90 cents for mailing and printing each copy, plus 600 total for research and writing. The price of the neewsletter is a 1.50 per copy. How many copies of the newletter must the club sell in order to break even?

asked by Tonnie
  1. x = number of newsletter copies
    0.90x = cost for mailing & printing
    600 = cost for research & writing
    0.90x + 600 = total cost for publishing newsletter
    1.50x = total from selling newsletter

    0.90x + 600 = 1.50x
    0.6x = 600
    x = 1000 newsletters to break-even
