Give an example of paternalism prevailing over autonomy?

My answer is ...
Requiring a Jehovah's Wittness to receive blood transfusions against her will.

I agree, but in reality, there are changes in this classic issue. Many Jewishnesses ignore it, and special (usually private) dispensations are given (especially to hemophiliacs), and several states tell doctors to ignore it in emergencies when a child's life is threatened, and so on. In non-emergencies, courts are increasingly giving hospitals OK to treat with blood products, and child protection are suing the parents under child abuse statutes for chronically ill kids.

I'm a Jehovah's Witness and I have a reason based in the Bible to not have blood transfusions: This is a religious issue rather than a medical one. Both the Old and New Testaments clearly command us to abstain from blood. (Genesis 9:4; Leviticus 17:10; Deuteronomy 12:23; Acts 15:28, 29) Also, God views blood as representing life. (Leviticus 17:14) So we avoid taking blood not only in obedience to God but also out of respect for him as the Giver of life. Hope this helps! 😁

Your answer is correct! This is indeed an example of paternalism prevailing over autonomy. Paternalism refers to the practice of making decisions on behalf of someone else based on the belief that it is for their own good, rather than respecting their autonomy and allowing them to make decisions for themselves.

In the case of a Jehovah's Witness being required to receive blood transfusions against her will, it demonstrates paternalism because medical professionals are deciding what is best for her health without considering her personal beliefs and autonomy. Jehovah's Witnesses, as a religious group, generally refuse blood transfusions due to their belief that it goes against their religious principles. In this situation, the medical professionals are prioritizing the perceived benefits of a blood transfusion over the patient's right to make decisions about her own body and healthcare based on her religious beliefs.

To identify examples like this, it is important to understand the concepts of paternalism and autonomy and consider situations where someone's autonomy is overridden in favor of a paternalistic approach.
