Mrs. Reid brought 32 orange and apple slices to her daughter's soccer practice. There were three times as many orange slices as there were apple slices. How many of each kind did she bring?

Easiest way to start to learn how to do this is like this.

Write down 3 "o"s then one "a"

ooo
a

Now you have 4 of everything. Keep doing that until you have 32.

oooooo
aa

There is 8.

How many do you end up with?

(Note: there is a way to do this with math and algebra, but it's usually not taught in 4th grade. Right now, get the visual sense of what is happening.)

I am not sure if a 4th grader would solve the problem as follows.

x = apple slices
3x = orange slices

x + 3x = 32
4x = 32
x = 8

x = 8 apple slices
3x = 3(8) = 24

24 + 8 = 32

Thank you! :)

1 apple slice, 3 orange slice, plus

1 apple slice, 3 orange slice, plus
1 apple slice, 3 orange slice, plus
1 apple slice, 3 orange slice, plus
1 apple slice, 3 orange slice, plus
1 apple slice, 3 orange slice, plus
1 apple slice, 3 orange slice, plus
1 apple slice, 3 orange slice, plus
equals 32 slices
also eguals 2 whole apples and 6 whole oranges. :P

If you have 1/3 what are two equivalent fractions for this problem

96
