Our son's 3rd grade teacher gave out a homework assignment which had the students make a sentence for each of their spelling words and then circle the "noun" in the sentence. We received his homework back from the teacher with the words, "I, you, He", circled. The comments were that they were not nouns but pronouns. We were wondering if at this age group 8-9 if they would know that nouns and pronouns would be different. Should the teacher stated cirle the common nouns? Thanks for your assistance on this problem.

all pronouns are nouns, so either way, your child is correct.

Nope, pronouns are not nouns... pronouns take the place of specific nouns. Example: Storm is a dog. HE is a merle Sheltie. HE is the pronoun referring to the specific name Storm.

I agree with GuruBlue. Even a third grader can memorize the common pronouns -- I, me, us, you, he, him, she, her, it, they, them.

At the 3rd grade level, students are typically introduced to the concept of nouns and pronouns in their language arts curriculum. Nouns are words that name people, places, things, or ideas, while pronouns are words that take the place of specific nouns.

In this case, the teacher asked the students to make sentences with their spelling words and circle the "noun" in each sentence. However, the teacher circled the words "I," "you," and "He" and commented that they were pronouns, not nouns.

It is reasonable to expect that 8-9-year-old students would have been introduced to the difference between nouns and pronouns by this grade level. While they may not have an in-depth understanding of the grammatical nuances, they should be aware that pronouns are a type of word that takes the place of a noun.

To clarify, in the English language, all pronouns are a subset of nouns, but not all nouns are pronouns. Nouns encompass a broader range of words that name people, places, things, or ideas, while pronouns specifically take the place of those nouns.

If the intention of the assignment was to identify and circle "common nouns," the teacher could have provided clarification by specifying that only common nouns should be circled. This would have minimized confusion and ensured that the assignment focused on the intended concept.

In summary, at the 3rd grade level, students should have basic knowledge of the difference between nouns and pronouns. The teacher could have provided clearer instructions by specifying "common nouns" if that was the intended focus of the assignment.
