Hi. I am working on my Final Project for my medical billing class. I am filling out a CMS-1500 form. The teacher has instructed us to code ONLY the diagnosis code CATEGORIES, NOT the ICD-9 code. I am confused about what the code CATEGORY is? We are coding HIV, AIDS, and Kaposi's Sarcoma. I was thinking that for HIV and AIDS the coding category would be 780-799 and for Kaposi's Sarcoma it would be 140-239, but I am not sure if this is correct. Any guide in the right direction would be GREATLY appreciated! Thank you!

One of the articles in here might help:

http://www.google.com/search?rlz=1C1GGGE_enUS379US379&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8&q=CMS-1500+form+diagnsis

If not, then change the search words and re-search until you find what you need.

Thank you. I have looked over the information but I am having a hard time trying to figure out how to put the coding category in the form correctly. From what I am understanding, the coding categories are in number ranges, (140-239) do I input it just like that? Or should I only input the first number in the category range? I'm so confused! Thank you for your help. It is greatly appreciated!!

Hi! I can definitely help you with your medical billing project. Let's start by understanding what code categories are in the context of diagnosis coding.

In the medical coding field, diagnosis codes are used to classify diseases, injuries, symptoms, and medical conditions. These codes are typically derived from various coding systems, such as the International Classification of Diseases (ICD).

Code categories refer to specific ranges or groups of codes within the coding system that are related to a particular subject or area. They provide a broad classification for specific conditions to help organize and distinguish them from other codes.

Now, let's address the code categories for the conditions you mentioned.

For HIV and AIDS:
The appropriate code category for HIV and AIDS in the current ICD-10-CM coding system is B20-B24. This code range specifically covers Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infection and can be further specified for different stages, manifestations, or complications related to HIV infection.

For Kaposi's Sarcoma:
Kaposi's Sarcoma is a type of cancer commonly associated with HIV/AIDS. In the ICD-10-CM coding system, the appropriate code category for Kaposi's Sarcoma would be C46.0-C46.9. This range represents malignant neoplasms of Kaposi's Sarcoma.

Please note that ICD-9 codes are no longer used in the current coding system, so it's important to reference and utilize the correct ICD-10-CM coding guidelines for accurate coding.

To find the correct code categories for any given medical condition, you can refer to coding manuals, such as the ICD-10-CM coding book. These books provide the necessary information to identify the appropriate code categories, code ranges, and any additional coding instructions.

Remember, it's crucial to adhere to the coding guidelines provided by your instructor or the relevant coding authority to ensure accurate and compliant coding.

I hope this clarifies the concept of code categories and assists you in accurately coding HIV, AIDS, and Kaposi's Sarcoma on the CMS-1500 form. If you have any further questions, feel free to ask!
