Would you please check these questions and my answers? Please let me know which I have wrong.

1. Anwar is a preschooler in a family
whose culture does not place much
emphasis on early language development
and reading. As a teacher, you would rightly see this as a threat to:

A) Anwar's future socialization
with mainstream children.

B) your ability to conduct
age-propriate learning
in language development.

C) your efforts to create a
multicultural environment
in which every child has
an equal opportunity to
participate.

D) Anwar's potential for success
in elementary school.

2. In early education, the term
"bridging the gap" refers to:

A) your goal of gradually transforming
non-mainstream children into
successful participants in your
mostly mainstream program.

B) discontinuity between home and
school learning contexts.

C) your efforts to acclimate
non-mainstream students as
quickly as possible into your
classroom program.

D) immersing non-mainstream children
into exclusive use of the dominant
mainstream language.

3. A speaker you overheard saying
___________ was employing literate
style oral language.

A) "Ey,Joe. Ow's about dropping by
sometime?"

B) "Hello. Uh huh. Huh uh! Bye."

C) "Open your book to page 93, and
complete the problems in the
blue-bordered box.

D) "Whew! Never again!!"
(accompanied by head-shaking and
ro;lling of the eyes).

Here are my answers. Please let me know which I have wrong.

1. (D) Anwar's potential for success
in elementary school.

2. (A) your goal of gradually
transforming non-mainstream
children into successful
participants in your mostly
mainstream program.

3. (D) "Whew! Never again!!"
(accompanied by head-shaking
and rolling of the eyes).

I agree with your first two answers. :-) But in # 3, (D) isn't an example of literate style oral language. There's a much better and clear answer for # 3.

<G> Ms Sue and I have a different take on 3. I would go with your answer. That sounds like a very age appropriate, literate response for a child.

Also look at #1 again... the child, who does not enter school being able to converse with other children his age, is not going to be able to learn as quickly and is not going to mainstream at all... I think. What does your book say about this one.

On question #1-- my text states:

The mismatch between children's early experience and school expectations seriously threaten the potential for school achievement. The area of literacy readiness is particularly vunerable to children's early
experiences.

On the third question- I know literate style oral language is refered to as decontextualized langauge, used in formal schooling. Informal language in the home is chacterized more by an
interpersonal style which there are many shared meanings among speakers.
That does not rely on words alone, but
on gestures,and facial expressions.

please help on question 1 and 3!

Your text indicates that you're right about # 1. It emphasizes that school achievement is dependent upon early experiences.

For # 3, your text states that decontextualized language is used in the formal school setting. I assumed from the question the speaker is an adult, so C is the best answer.

This site has more information about decontextualized language.

In the light of what your book says, I would agree with the C answer.

A speaker you overhead saying was employing literate style oral language

Here are the correct answers to your questions:

1. The correct answer is C) your efforts to create a multicultural environment in which every child has an equal opportunity to participate. While Anwar's future socialization with mainstream children and his potential for success in elementary school may be affected by the lack of emphasis on early language development and reading, the question specifically asks about the teacher's perspective. The teacher should rightly see this as a threat to their efforts to create a multicultural environment where every child has an equal opportunity to participate.

2. The correct answer is C) your efforts to acclimate non-mainstream students as quickly as possible into your classroom program. Bridging the gap in early education refers to the teacher's efforts to reduce discontinuity between home and school learning contexts and acclimate non-mainstream students into the classroom program as quickly as possible.

3. The correct answer is C) "Open your book to page 93, and complete the problems in the blue-bordered box." The speaker employing literate style oral language would provide specific instructions or information with a clear structure, as shown in option C. Options A, B, and D do not demonstrate the use of literate style oral language.
