  1. Take the common denominator of both fractions and multiply on each side.
    Simplify and solve for x.

    5x/5=-3x/8+1
    Common denominator is 40, so
    40*5x/5 = 40(-3x/8+1)
    40x = -15x + 40
    40x +15x = 40
    x = 40/55 = 8/11
