I'm having trouble understanding equivalent fractions. I'm getting frustated with myself, I feel so stupid for not understanding it.

Here's the 2 questions I have to answer:

1. Find a number for x in 18/27 = x/3 so that the fractions are equivalent.

2. Find a fraction equivalent to 3/8.
a. 15/40
b. 3/4
c. 6/24
d. 12/16

1. 18/27 = x/3

27x = 54
x = 54/27 = 2

2. Reduce fractions a, c and d to loweest terms to find which equals 3/8. The answer is not b, since 3/4 is not equal to 3/8

Thank you so much.

It's completely normal to have difficulty understanding certain concepts, so don't be too hard on yourself. Equivalent fractions can sometimes be a bit confusing, but once you grasp the concept, it becomes much easier.

To find equivalent fractions, you need to remember that multiplying or dividing both the numerator and the denominator of a fraction by the same number results in an equivalent fraction. Here's how you can approach each of the questions you mentioned:

1. Find a number for x in 18/27 = x/3 so that the fractions are equivalent:

To solve for x, you can set up a proportion by cross-multiplying the fractions. Cross-multiplication means multiplying the numerator of the first fraction (18) by the denominator of the second fraction (3) and vice versa. You can then set the two products equal to each other and solve for x.

18/27 = x/3

(18 * 3) / 27 = x

54 / 27 = x

x = 2

Therefore, x = 2 is the number that makes the fractions equivalent. So, 18/27 is equivalent to 2/3.

2. Find a fraction equivalent to 3/8:

To find an equivalent fraction, you need to multiply or divide both the numerator and denominator by the same number. In this case, you can find an equivalent fraction by multiplying both the numerator and denominator of 3/8 by the same number.

To determine which of the options (a, b, c, d) is equivalent to 3/8, you can simplify each fraction to its simplest form and see if it matches 3/8.

Let's simplify each of the options:
a. 15/40 can be simplified to 3/8, since both the numerator and denominator are divisible by 5.
b. 3/4 is already in its simplest form and is not equivalent to 3/8.
c. 6/24 can be simplified to 1/4, since both the numerator and denominator are divisible by 6.
d. 12/16 can be simplified to 3/4, since both the numerator and denominator are divisible by 4.

So, out of the options (a, b, c, d), only option a. 15/40 is equivalent to 3/8.

I hope this explanation helps you understand equivalent fractions better. Feel free to ask if you have any further questions!
